What is my calling in life? Do I only have one? I don’t believe so; I find peace in knowing I have multiple. It also gives me peace knowing that I don’t just have this life to accomplish it all as I have the next also. My instructor shared this story about the Park Avenue Potato Peeler Salesman.
The gist of it, he lives on Park Avenue and is a street vendor selling potato peelers in his expensive suit. Often times we judge others' financial situation by what they do for a living. This man knows how to work and how to sell. He already has a place on Park Avenue yet he still pounds the pavement because he wants to pay for his granddaughters to attend college. Did I mention he’s in his late 60’s? He’s incredibly inspiring.
Creating a life of meaning was also a topic. We don’t need to “craft a perfect plan” as Jeff Sanderfer says, but when we have a plan, we will know where we are headed. It’s important that life have meaning and it’s important that we decide ahead of time what meaning we want our life to have. Jeff’s book Stars and Stepping-stones reminds us that we only take this earthly journey once; how important it is to be direct in our plans for it. Stars represent our ultimate goals and stepping-stones are the intermediate goals we set to get us to our stars.
Jeffery A Thomson taught us about Martin Luther’s belief that any type of work might be considered a calling, as long as we were offering service to mankind. In Doctrine and Covenants 58:27-28 we learn to be “anxiously engaged” in the work of the Lord. We can trust that the Lord has equipped us to do so because soon after we are told that we have the power in us. My favorite quote or message of the week is that we are not to follow our bliss but to follow our blisters. I enjoy working hard and know it’s opened a lot of doors for me. I plan to continue this pattern.
